Skagens Museum was founded in 1908 in order to collect and preserve the works of the Skagen artists in the surroundings in which they were created. The most prominent Skagen artists are the Danish painters Anna and Michael Ancher and P.S. Krøyer. Since 1928 the museum has resided in a building designed by the architect Ulrik Plesner. Extensions to the museum were built in 1982 and 1989, and today the collection includes over 1800 works, mainly from the period 1870-1930.
